Location: Blakeley Manor, 2401 NE Blakeley St., Seattle, WA  98105

Parent plant (below) was located in a pot in the east wing of the building, in the east lounge of the 3rd floor. I am told that the plant had never flowered.

4 cuttings from the parent plant were in a pot in the west wing of the building, in the west lounge on the 2nd floor, but the pot and its contents were removed.

I was given 3 cuttings by the owner of the parent plant in late December 2007.

The Parent Plant was getting pot-bound, and was probably stressed from over-watering. In February 2008, it collapsed, and was removed.

Fortunately, the 3 cuttings that I took are thriving, and growing at a rapid rate. The soil drains well and is moist but not wet, and I let the soil dry a bit before I rewater, not more that 1 to 1 1/2 cup per week. Each cutting now has three leaves, and the axis of each leaf node has the start of a new leaf branch.

This is a type of "angel-wing" begonia, since its leaves are obliquely cordate. The leaf margins are ciliate, and the undersides and petioles of the leaves are hirsute. The veins on the underside of the leaves are beet-red in color. The upper surfaces of the leaves are shiny and leathery, and uniformly deep green in color, except for the margin, which is a paler green, and unmarked by spots or other figures. The upper surfaces of the leaves are lirate (ridged) between the major veins, rather than rugose; that is, they are bellowed outward from the veins like a sail under wind, or the ribs of an inflated hot air balloon.

NOTE added 12 Mar 2008:

I have discovered that this is the hybrid, Begonia 'Thurstonii' (Begonia metallica x Begonia sanguinea, Thurston, 1887). See the links below:
